At the end of May 2026, the Physics Faculty held a course work competition among second-year students. Participants went through several stages of selection: first, a presentation of their works within their departments, then an evaluation by an expert committee, and finally, oral presentations by the finalists.
Among the finalists was our student Nikita Gusev, who presented his course work supervised by LIMU research fellow Ekaterina M. Ponomarchuk: “Pulsed ultrasound approach for recanalization and fractionation of gastric and esophageal cancer tumors: the first experimental ex vivo demonstration and investigation of the influence of tumor morphology”.
This study was the first to experimentally achieve mechanical fractionation of various types of gastric and esophageal cancer ex vivo using boiling histotripsy. The resistance of various types of these tumors to mechanical fractionation was studied, and recommendations were formulated for optimizing treatment regimes to perform effective treatment.
Nikita’s presentation made a great impression on the jury – and he received a second-degree winner’s diploma! The award ceremony took place on May 23, 2026, to coincide with the annual Physicist’s Day celebration.
