Our research on the properties of aging human hematomas and their resistance to histotripsy was published in a top-rated journal Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology

A top-rated journal Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (Q1, IF 2.9) published our paper titled «Elastic properties of aging human hematoma model in vitro and its susceptibility to histotripsy liquefaction» – the result of our joint research with Medical Center of Moscow State University and Dmitry Rogachev National Medical Research Center.
The paper is devoted to the novel clinical application of histotripsy for non-invasive liquefaction of large human hematomas and subsequent aspiration of the liquefied content with a fine needle.
In particular, our publication studied the properties of human hematomas in vitro over time:
- their elasticity – via shear wave elastography method (at the Medical Center of Moscow State University);
- their ultrastructure – via scanning electron microscopy (at the Biology Faculty of Moscow State University);
- and their resistance to histotripsy liquefaction (at LIMU).
The results showed:
- in addition to the generally accepted characteristic of softness, the susceptibility of hematomas to histotripsy liquefaction increased with higher water content in hematomas;
- hematoma liquefaction process can be accelerated using shorter sub-millisecond ultrasound pulses;
- histotripsy method can liquefy human hematomas down to fragments less than 200 microns in length, thus allowing for unhindered aspiration of the obtained liquid with a fine needle.
