LIMU visits the first ultrasound neurosurgery Medical Center in Russia
On June 25–26, 2024, our research fellows Alisa Krokhmal, Ekaterina Ponomarchuk, and PhD student Daria Chupova visited the V.S. Buzaev Memorial International Medical Center (Ufa, Russia).
V.S. Buzaev Medical Center was the first in Russia (since 2020) to use high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) for transcranial ablation of specific areas in human brain to non-invasively treat movement disorders such as:
- Essential tremor
- Parkinson's disease
- Dystonia
- Dyskinesia, and others.
With focused ultrasound under MRI guidance, patients can be treated effectively and gently without any incisions or pain. This new treatment method was developed by Insightec and has a CE mark since 2012, meaning it is approved in Europe, is FDA approved in the USA since 2016, and is now approved by Roszdravnadzor and available in Russia. To date, around 5000 patients worldwide have been successfully treated with this method.
LIMU team had the opportunity to observe this innovative treatment method in action and discuss current issues requiring new solutions.
We thank our new colleagues for the invitation and warm reception! We look forward to fruitful cooperation!
