LIMU at the 5th International School on Therapeutic Ultrasound

The 5th International School on Therapeutic Ultrasound took place in Les Houches, France from 8 to 13 March 2015. The main idea of the School is the wide consideration of the urgent problems in therapeutic ultrasound. The leading researchers from different countries and fields of science (physics, bioengineering, biology, immunology, oncology, chemists, surgeons, practitioners, representatives of the companies for the production of ultrasonic technology) attend the School. The multidisciplinary approach is particularly valuable for research on junction of different sciences. The School was attended by about 75 researchers, including 20 speakers - the world's leading scientists in the field of therapeutic ultrasound, practicing surgeons and radiologists, about 30 undergraduate and PhD students of different specialties from the US, Russia, France, Britain, Germany and Holland. Vera A. Khokhlova and Oleg A. Sapozhnikov introduced the participants with the physical fundamentals of nonlinear acoustics, ultrasound propagation in biological tissues, generation and calibration of high-power ultrasonic fields.Undergraduate and PhD students engaged in medical ultrasound (Maria M. Karzova, Elena A. Annenkova, Anastasiya V. Nikolaeva and Pavel B. Rosnitsky) have made presentations at the student's competition on therapeutic ultrasound.Young scientists from our laboratory every year receive high marks from the competition jury. This year PhD student Anastasiya Nikolaeva was one of the winners of school. Maria Karzova and Petr Yuldashev were awarded the highest award at the previous schools. It is remarkable that  undergraduate and PhD students have a unique opportunity to discuss with the professionals from different areas of science.
A lot of interesting and unusual lectures were read at the School. One of the most unusual were plenary lectures of professors Elizabeth Repaski (immunology, Institute of Cancer Research Roswell Park, New York, USA), Fabrice Romano (the Head of the EyeTechCare company, France) and Robert Dallapiatstsa (neurosurgeon, University of Virginia, USA). Elizabeth Repaski told about the methods of inducing an immune response of the body for the treatment of cancer. Fabrice Romano -
the Head of the newly established French company EyeTechCare, spoke about his successful experience developed bypractice. Neurosurgeon Robert Dallapiatstsa presented the results of the recent school of clinical studies and of successful operations on the use of focused ultrasound for non-invasive effects on the brain for the treatment of essential tremor, Parkinson's disease and for the tumors destruction .The School had the great atmosphere of enthusiasm. Participants had the opportunity to communicate with each other not only during the lecture, but in an informal setting - during lunches and dinners organized at the School, skiing and other sports activities.
